Meet the Executive Committee

The Western Australian Executive of the Australian Local Government Women's Association Inc is elected each year at the Annual General Meeting, when all positions become vacant. The AGM usually coincides with Local Government Week held in August.

The President may only nominate for two consecutive years after which time they are ineligible for election.

Mayor Sue Doherty, City of South Perth

Elected to the City of South Perth in 2002, Sue is committed to the development and growth of the City, and is passionate about maintaining and enhancing South Perth’s natural and built environment.  Utilising the Oregon Model of Community Visioning, Sue has been instrumental in promoting the City’s plan to build a vibrant and sustainable vision for the next 20 years, and her drive and leadership have ensured significant community participation in the City’s decision making processes.

With a strong commitment to social justice, cultural diversity and gender equity, Sue has a professional background in early childhood education, community development, management and alternative dispute resolution, and currently undertakes consultancy work with community organisations.

Sue is a keen advocate for women, actively encouraging and supporting women to move into local government.  She believes that younger women are our future leaders and she works hard encouraging them to move into leadership roles both as Councillors and senior management.

Sue believes ALGWA can provide much needed support and mentoring for the advancement of women in all areas of local government.

Cr Veronica Lawrance, City of South Perth
First term Councillor, Veronica runs her own PR and Marketing Consultancy enjoying short and long term contracts.

Previous clients include the West Australian Football Commission, Chippers Funerals, Fremantle Cemetery, Presbyterian Ladies' College, HBF, Landlink Australia and many others.

Elected to Council in October 2009,Cr Lawrance holds a Bachelor of Commerce (PR) from Curtin University and is embarking on a Master’s Degree in Communications.
 
Cr Lawrance has lived in South Perth almost exclusively since she migrated from the UK in 1985. With strong family and community values, she is passionate about communications, education and intergenerational understanding, by building relationships through collaboration and consultation.

Darla Blake, Director Strategy and Community Services, City of Nedlands

A results orientated people person and strategic thinker, with an energetic self motivated positive nature with a strong sense of professionalism and commitment to excellence. Darla likes to be involved, be visible and make things happen! Enjoying a diverse career in the public and private sectors has provided Darla with strong skills in leadership, relationship building, advocacy, consultation processes and governance advice, coaching skills, administration, project management and the ability to work with people from all walks of life.

Her leadership style is communicative and inclusive - listen, learn, then lead – with best results created from a shared vision, passion and enthusiasm!

Darla enjoys creating a momentum that motivates and inspires people to perform at higher levels, adding value overall, acknowledging the importance in celebrating successes. Such an approach generally gets most people excited and committed to be involved - people like to be on a winning team!

Kat Pinder, Officer City of Belmont

Kat Pinder works at the City of Belmont as Coordinator Community Development. She is also an active Women’s Liberation organiser and has co-coordinated Perth Reclaim the Night each year since 2007 and worked on several other campaigns to end violence against women. One of Kat’s major achievements in the local government sector was being selected as a National Ambassador for the 2010 Year of Women in Local Government.

Jill Mathwin, Shire of Kojonup (Shire President)

Jill Mathwin is enjoying her third term as a Councillor at the Shire of Kojonup.

A retired Physiotherapist and company director, during her career Jill gained much experience and knowledge of the various issues common to women in the workforce while working at Royal Perth Hospital’s Shenton Park Annex, Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital and the Spastic Centre. Jill further developed her knowledge while working overseas in the UK, Canada and the USA. She has now retired from the family farm into the township of Kojonup.

Mayor Kelly Howlett, Town of Port Hedland

As the Mayor of the Town of Port Hedland since being elected by the community in October 2009, Kelly is the second female and the youngest ever Mayor of the Town of Port Hedland and is currently the youngest Mayor in Western Australia.

Since moving to Hedland, Kelly has demonstrated leadership in raising the awareness and profile of the natural and social environment in Hedland and the Pilbara. Kelly has been actively involved in the local community, through various service and sporting groups.

As a full time Mayor, Kelly continues to be a passionate advocate for the town and the region, both locally and interstate.

Kelly Howlett was the founder of the local Care For Hedland Environmental Association which through on-ground conservation and town pride efforts, as well as ongoing dialogue with various stakeholders, has seen the Association become an effective and successful vehicle by which natural and social environmental issues can be raised and worked through in a positive and constructive manner.

Jennifer Hess, Officer City of South Perth

 Jenni has 13 years experience in local government, specifically in the recreation/community services area.  Jenni has broad experience in leisure planning, project management and community engagement.
 
Jenni is active in establishing and mantaining positive relationships and is passionate about all things sport and recreation and engaging the community.

Cr Janet Gee, City of Belmont

 

Janet was elected on 17 October 2009 in Central Ward, City of Belmont. She sits on several Committees , namely Committee for the Environment and is Deputy Chair for Community Capacity. Her Council interests include Crime prevention, Planning, Health, Environment and Community.

Janet works full time as well as being a Councillor and has completed her Diploma of Local Government (awarded at the recent WALGA Confernce and is studying for a Diploma of Business and Management.
